چکیده

The class of equistable graphs is defined by the existence of a cost structure on the vertices such that the maximal stable sets are characterized by their costs. This graph class, not contained in any nontrivial hereditary class, has so far been studied mostly from a structural point of view; characterizations and polynomial time recognition algorithms have been obtained for special cases. We focus on complexity issues for equistable graphs and related classes. We describe a simple pseudo-polynomial-time dynamic programming algorithm to solve the maximum weight stable set problem along with the weighted independent domination problem in some classes of graphs, including equistable graphs. Our results are obtained within the wider context of Boolean optimization; corresponding hardness results are also provided. More specifically, we show that the above problems are APX-hard for equistable graphs and that it is co-NP-complete to determine whether a given cost function on the vertices of a graph defines an equistable cost structure of that graph. Structural Results for Equistable Graphs and Related Graph Classes

The class of equistable graphs is defined by the existence of a weight structure on the vertices where maximal stable sets are characterized by their weights. This class, not contained in any nontrivial hereditary class, has been studied both from a structural and an algorithmic point of view, however no combinatorial characterization is known for these graphs. We present some structural result...

On equistable, split, CIS, and related classes of graphs

We consider several graphs classes defined in terms of conditions on cliques and stable sets, including CIS, split, equistable, and other related classes. We pursue a systematic study of the relations between them. As part of this study, we introduce two generalizations of CIS graphs, obtain a new characterization of split graphs, and a characterization of CIS line graphs.

Structural Results for General Partition, Equistable and Triangle graphs

Miklavič and Milanič (2011) introduced the connections among the classes of equistable, general partition and triangle graphs. We present results concerning the three classes aforementioned. In particular, we show that the general partition and triangle classes are both closed under the operations of substitution, induction and contraction of modules. Moreover, we show that the triangle conditi...

Recognizing k-equistable Graphs in FPT Time

A graph G = (V,E) is called equistable if there exist a positive integer t and a weight function w : V → N such that S ⊆ V is a maximal stable set of G if and only if w(S) = t. Such a function w is called an equistable function of G. For a positive integer k, a graph G = (V,E) is said to be k-equistable if it admits an equistable function which is bounded by k. We prove that the problem of reco...

Equistable distance-hereditary graphs

A graph is called equistable when there is a nonnegative weight function on its vertices such that a set S of vertices has total weight 1 if and only if S is maximal stable. We show that a necessary condition for a graph to be equistable is sufficient when the graph in question is distance-hereditary. This is used to design a polynomial-time recognition algorithm for equistable distanceheredita...
